A 29-year-old Australian tourist has suffered a severe medical emergency while on vacation in Bali, Indonesia, leaving her family working urgently to arrange her return home.
Luca Loveday, from Brisbane, was traveling in Indonesia with her best friend when she suddenly began shaking at a restaurant before collapsing, according to reports from news.com.au, Sky News, and The Courier Mail.
She is currently in intensive care at a hospital in Bali, where doctors have found multiple brain bleeds, a fractured skull, and swelling on the brain. Reports also say there is air present in her brain, which is currently preventing her from being medically cleared to fly back to Australia.
Her sister, Rikki Loveday, told news.com.au that family members have remained at her bedside every day since her admission to ICU. She described Luca’s condition as confused, with noticeable memory issues, adding that she is often unsure of her surroundings or what happened to her.
Australian government officials confirmed they are providing consular assistance to an Australian citizen in Bali but declined to give further details.
What was meant to be a long-awaited holiday quickly turned into a medical crisis. According to Rikki, Luca had been working overseas and was excited to spend time with her friend in Bali, a destination known for its beaches and waterfalls. The incident occurred just a few days into the trip, and the cause of her collapse remains unknown. Her family has speculated whether she may have fainted or experienced a seizure.
After learning of her condition, relatives immediately traveled to Bali to be with her. A family member described the situation as a complete shock, writing on a GoFundMe page created on May 3 that Luca is “strong, kind, and deeply loved,” and urgently needs support from those around her.

As of May 7, the fundraiser had raised nearly 26,000 Australian dollars (about 19,000 USD) to help cover medical expenses and the cost of eventually transporting her back to Brisbane.
Neither the GoFundMe organizer nor the Australian Consulate-General in Denpasar has publicly commented on the situation.
At this stage, it remains unclear when Luca will be stable enough to travel home. Her sister said that once she is cleared for transport, she will likely require further medical treatment and rehabilitation upon arrival in Australia.
Rikki also described the emotional toll on the family, saying the experience has been extremely difficult and frightening. She added that it has been the most overwhelming situation the family has ever faced, while expressing gratitude for the support they have received so far.
