A contestant on The Chase died one month after winning a huge jackpot on the show, sadly passing away before his episode would even air.

Beloved headteacher Tim McCarthy appeared on last night’s episode of the hit ITV quiz show, showing off the grit and determination he showed throughout his teaching career to take home his share of a £100k prize.

However, he tragically would never get the chance to enjoy his money, as he passed away as a result of a long-term illness before the episode would even air, with his friends and family gathering in a pub to watch his posthumous victory.

The Chase has thrown up some memorable moments over the years, but few have been as emotional as last night’s episode, as McCarthy battled through to win £50k alongside another contestant after defeating chaser Jenny Ryan ‘The Vixen’ in the final round.

His wife Rachel told the BBC: “He was so excited when he was selected for the show, even though he was very ill. [Watching the episode is] going to be very difficult, but it was part of his bucket list.”

Despite claiming such a massive prize, his loved ones were completely in the dark about how he’d fared as they tuned in on Wednesday night, with his friend Stuart revealing: “He never told us who won, so we can’t wait to see what happened. He was a brilliant friend with a brilliant mind.”

Tim did it in daring style as well, taking the high offer of £95,000 and making it back before sharing the combined £100k pot with his fellow winning contestant.

During the episode, he revealed that he wanted to get a decent roof on their extension as it’s ‘too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer’.

“I genuinely don’t want any money, I’m here just to have fun,” he said, and on winning the huge sum, he added: “As long as I’ve got £50 for a slap up meal that’ll do me.”

It’s not the only huge success for which he will be remembered, however, as he also played a significant part in saving Stockport Academy after securing a £27 million grant (via Metro).

He also made headlines after betting on his students to improve their GCSE results and then sharing the money with the students who had completed the exams.

“Very rare does a quiz show bring me to almost tears, but seeing Tim McCarthy winning his share of £100k tonight in The Chase for his family when he knew he hadn’t long to live is a rewarding legacy for his bravery. Sadly, Tim never saw this programme air,” said one viewer over on X.

Meanwhile, another said: “Obviously with their permission that this episode is being aired, but I can’t begin to imagine how difficult it must be for Tim’s family to watch. RIP Tim.”
