David Muir has another feather to add to his cap, thanks to his continuing stint with ABC’s World News Tonight.

The 52-year-old news anchor’s primetime evening news show won the News Emmy for outstanding live news program for the fourth year in a row earlier this week. In total, ABC took home eight wins at the 47th News Emmys, followed closely by Nat Geo with seven.

David succeeded Diane Sawyer as the anchor for World News Tonight in September 2014, having taken the show to new ratings highs in the nearly 12 years since, plus award-winning journalism.

The host himself took to social media on Friday, May 29, to acknowledge the win with a post on his Instagram page that read: “On a shoot w no cell service and came out to learn our team was on stage accepting the Emmy for best newscast. I love our team. And our viewers,” then quipping: “Back to no cell service now. It’s kind of nice.”

Fans inundated the journalist with congratulatory messages like: “Congratulations David and your amazing team at World News tonight for a well deserved Emmy award,” and: “Congrats on your multiple Emmys! You over achiever, they are well deserved.”

David’s early years in journalism

Growing up in Syracuse, New York, David developed an interest in journalism and the news from a very young age, especially by watching Peter Jennings. “I was the kid who would excuse myself from the backyard and go in and watch Peter Jennings,” he told TIME.

“I was drawn to him. And I don’t think at 12 or 13 you can put into words why you’re drawn to a particular journalist, but Peter’s curiosity was infectious. He seemed to be the one who was having a conversation with America every night.”

Reporting to a divided nation

Being in the same position Peter was in then, however, has given David a new perspective on how people will take the news. “I think that in this era, where people are really hungry for someone that they can trust and a team they can trust, that it’s just something they sense in their gut.”

He continued: “And we go out there and try to earn that trust every single night. And we’re not perfect. One of the great gifts of this job is that you can go out the next night and give it your best shot again. But we never forget that we’re reporting to a divided country.”

And the excitement of doing his best out in the field hasn’t dulled all these years later. “I think it’s really important to continue to try being better,” David shared with People.

“The moment you stop learning, the moment you’re no longer curious, the moment you don’t believe you can be better than you were a night ago or a week ago, is probably a time to sort of check yourself.”

“I still feel like I’m that kid racing into that local newsroom all those years ago,” he gushed. “I love this job. I love the people that I interview and get to meet, and I think that journalism is more important than ever.”
