The women’s 1500m quarterfinal at the 2026 Winter Olympics turned from high-speed precision to chaos in an instant. Polish speedskater Kamila Sellier went down hard after contact in a tight pack, and a rival’s blade caught her beneath the eye as they tangled at full stride. At racing speeds, there’s no time to brace — only impact.

It was a scary moment on the speedskating track.

In the sixth quarterfinal head of the women’s 1500 meters, Polish skater Kamila Sellier did not finish after taking a blade to the face in a bloody scene.

The 25-year-old laid in the corner cradling her head above a pool of blood.

The race was delayed for several minutes with 13 laps to go as medics attended to Sellier and attendants cleaned the ice.

Sellier gave the crowd a thumbs-up as she left the ice on a stretcher.

Polish officials said she received stiches before heading to the hospital, than that her eye was OK.

Fontana, a 15-time Olympic medalist from Italy, received treatment on her left hip from her physiotherapist during the stoppage and finished second in the heat to Belgium’s Hanne Desmet.
