It’s unclear exactly what mental troubles plagued the actor’s eldest daughter. However, it was reported that in the years leading up to her death, she had picked up a service dog to assist with her mental illness.

She announced that she added a furry friend to her life — which she affectionately named Joni after the singer Joni Mitchell — in a post shared to her since-deleted professional website.

“Joni is my incredible service dog, who has been assisting me with my own struggles with mental illness for the past 5 years,” Katherine wrote.
