While the UK takes part in the annual “Whamageddon” phenomenon, we’ve dug out an unmissable George Michael clip that’s well worth breaking your streak over! Filmed at Wembley Arena in December 2006, this flashback footage captures what could well be the Wham! frontman’s most incredible performance of “Last Christmas” – a set so iconic that it’s already racked up over 4.2 million YouTube views in less than a year of hitting the site!
Music Man readers can watch the magic unfold in the video below. But ex-Wham! fangirls better prepare to have some tissues at hand—this clip puts George Michael’s legacy front and centre.
It all kicks off with the sound of sleigh bells chiming through the dark of Wembley Arena before the stage lights gleam to a shower of silver glitter and snow falling across the excitable audience.
A gold-suited George Michael grooves in the midst of the snow shower, delivering his first iconic chorus through the storm as his masses of fans chant his lyrics back in the ultimate festive sing-along.
Don’t miss George’s impeccable dad dancing as this clip plays out, or the mind-blowing voices of the crowd as George hands them the mic for one-off lines, his audience reflecting every single word and proving their undying love for Wham!
George’s personality shines bright as starlight through this clip as he sings pitch-perfect with a heartwarming smile, delivering his spoken-word “Merry Christmas” lyric like a greeting to a long-since-separated friend.
Through it all, it’s absolutely astounding to witness George command the vast stage of Wembley entirely alone, slaying a song he first debuted over thirty years before this gig and clearly having the time of his life whilst receiving the same levels of love as if he was performing with the full Wham! band.
Following George Michael’s tragic death on Christmas Day, 2016, Wham’s surviving members, Pepsi, Shirlie, and Andrew Ridgeley revealed George Michael’s connection to the Christmas season in an interview with Smooth Radio. They commented, “He just loved the idea of gifts and that moment in time, the end of the year. Christmas trees, beautiful candles in his home, welcoming everybody in, having a little party […] I think he liked Christmas as well because it was bigger than him. When you become a star of that name and that presence, all of a sudden he was equal with everyone because we’re all going to share Christmas together. He wasn’t the star of it; Christmas was bigger.”
But why is this performance still causing such a stir, years on, and amassing views far into the millions?
Wham!’s “Last Christmas” celebrated a milestone last year, with fans marking the 40th anniversary of the single’s release by catapulting the hit to #1 on the UK charts for the third year running since 2022. Scoring at #2 on its initial release back in 1984, “Last Christmas” already looks set to steal the top spot for the fourth year in a row, already ranking at #3 at the time of writing this article, with weeks still to go until Christmas Day.
And that’s not to mention “Whamageddon” – the annual challenge to completely avoid hearing Wham’s overplayed Christmas hit for the entirety of the festive season, inadvertently turning this classic into a modern Rick Roll. But in our eyes, if you’re going to lose, you might as well do it in style. This Wembley performance from George is just about as good as it gets!
George Michael’s Wembley performance is a powerful reminder of his enduring talent and the emotional pull of “Last Christmas.”
