“GET OUT RIGHT NOW” — Johnny Carson rarely hated anyone… but there was one guest he was determined to expose on live TV. That guest was Uri Geller — the famous mentalist known for bending spoons with “his mind,” and according to the book Love Johnny Carson, Carson quietly set up a major move before the cameras rolled. Once the segment started, everything suddenly went off track, stretching to 28 minutes with almost no way to save it, leaving Geller embarrassed on American television.

The One ‘Tonight Show’ Guest Johnny Carson Absolutely ‘Despised’: ‘He Hated Phony’

As Mark Malkoff’s illuminating new book Love Johnny Carson quickly points out, the iconic late night talk show host rarely “hated” any of the guests he brought onto his hit program.

But one notable exception to this rule took the form of famed mentalist Uri Geller, who Malkoff claimed Carson ardently despised.

According to Malkoff’s book, Carson, an accomplished amateur magician in his own right, hated most psychics and so-called mediums for intentionally fooling easily-cowed audiences.

Furious at Geller’s increasingly popular mystic act, Carson plotted out ways he might expose the psychic live on The Tonight Show.

“Carson hated mentalists (like Geller) who claimed to have psychic and supernatural powers, for gullible people,” Malkoff writes in his book. “And he secretly planned to use his platform to expose Geller as a fake.”

As per Love Johnny Carson, Geller’s scheduled act for The Tonight Show was to involve the mentalist bending an array of metal objects using only “his mind,” a fairly straightforward trick that, Carson believed, most amateur magicians like himself could perform.

Prior to Geller’s performance, however, Carson instructed his staff to ensure that no one (especially Geller) touch any of the items for the act ahead of time, forcing Geller to perform the feat without any means of preparation.

Due to the last-minute change, Geller’s act wound up being a catastrophe, with the mentalist only able to slightly bend one spoon over the course of five segments spread over the course of 28 minutes.

“I didn’t know at that time that [Carson] was an amateur magician,” Geller told Malkoff years later. “I also didn’t know that he was a total skeptic. I was humiliated. It was my first major TV show in America. By the end of the show, I was devastated. I thought to myself, ‘Uri Geller, you are finished.”

Fortunately, Geller wound up quickly finding his way back to the mainstream spotlight, leading to his successful magical act on The Merv Griffin Show a short time later.

Every December since 1983, Japan has pulled off something almost unreal: a choir of 10,000 people coming together to sing the powerful final part of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Add a full orchestra to that, and the sound becomes overwhelming in the best way possible.

“HE THOUGHT STAYING HOME WOULD BE EASY.” Netflix has just unleashed a family comedy so chaotic it turns confidence into full-blown panic. What follows is pure disaster: missed school runs, emotional implosions, laundry gone wrong, and a slow, hilarious unraveling as he realizes the job he mocked might be the hardest one there is. He wasn’t meant to be the star of the moment—but the second Tim Conway walked out dressed as a lion, everything went off the rails. 🦁 What should’ve been a simple sketch on The Carol Burnett Show turned into pure chaos when Conway’s “lazy lion” started doing all the wrong things at all the wrong times. He growled when he shouldn’t, scratched himself in the middle of the scene, and completely shattered Carol Burnett’s composure on live TV. Harvey Korman fought to stay serious, but it was a losing battle—every glance at Conway made him crack. 😂 The mane kept slipping, the roars got stranger by the second, and the audience was laughing so hard they could barely breathe. By the end, it wasn’t even a sketch anymore—it was Tim Conway in full control, tearing through the scene and proving once again that when he goes wild, comedy doesn’t stand a chance.
