When the dancers of Riverdance stepped onto the stage in shimmering blue-and-gold dresses, the audience expected elegance — but nobody seemed prepared for the moment the music began and those lightning-fast feet started moving

It is always sublime to see a stunning performance that mixes tradition with the modern world. There is that glimpse into the past, the rich traditions from diverse cultures that seem to capture the hearts and minds of people. For that very reason, the many aspects of that culture are kept alive for generations to come.

When you think of countries with rich histories, Ireland is surely on that list. Celtic culture has endured for so long, even inspiring many stories that have been made in to TV shows and books.

Perhaps one well known part of Irish culture is their dancing.

The whole standing erect with quick kicking feet and legs that twist at odd angles done to almost like a tap or clog dance, usually done by Leprechauns in films and cartoons are certainly accurate.

Riverdance brings to life traditional Irish music and dance done with spectacular stage sets and lighting with performers dressed in Irish themed outfits. Check out these ladies.

There are seven of them by the end but it starts off with two. In striking blue dresses accentuated with gold trim, they step dance with a powerful rhythm while maintaining grace and poise. Hands on their hips and to the sides, they look straight up while smiling at each other and the crowd as they maintain that stiff posture letting their footwork do the talking.

That young lady is amazing too!

Look at her dazzle the crowd with her dancing. Yes, the audience is actually clapping along. That taller lady eventually leaves her alone until a much younger girl comes out to the murmuring admiration of the audience.

Age is just a number, ladies and gentlemen. Mieka is 9 and Molly 5.

They are sisters if my Irish translation is correct. These little ladies have gold in those heels. That’s not just Irish luck, but genuine skill!

Center stage with a beaming smile, Molly quick steps her way to the audience’s hearts, and even that stage seems brighter with her on it. Mieka stands to the side, letting her sister have her solo act. Guessing she’s also having a short rest.

Eventually, her sister joins in again and more ladies and a man emerge from the back for a spectacular display of Irish dancing. Three in blue and gold, the other four in black, the women and man seem to take the routine to another level. Moving as one to the beat of the music, the sounds of their shoes tapping to the same rhythmic clapping of the audience, it is a wonderful display of traditional dance with a modern flavor.

Even those judges are stunned.

Now you may wonder why it’s only the feet that move. It was genuinely believed that upper body movement was limited as back then, people danced in crowded areas like pubs or barns. They knew how to party that’s for sure!

There are shots of their feet moving together and if you blink, you will miss a lot. It is such a dazzling display of movement. The moment the music ends and this group of amazing dancers strike a final pose, the audience erupts into boisterous applause. Just like in Irish pubs. Perfect.

Let the Irish gold into your home as you watch these amazing ladies below!
